Large Service Transition
Heavy-lifting
Migration to Azure Cloud for Global Infrastructure Monitoring (Deloitte)
Summary: Successfully migrated infrastructure and web application monitoring from on-premises SCOM (4 legacy instances) to 2 Azure hosted, achieving global visibility for Deloitte and 12 NSE member firms.
Challenge:
Fragmented monitoring across 4 SCOM instances.
Manual configuration and tuning for 2000+ servers. Expected 6000 servers to be monitored after migration.
Expanding monitoring needs for Deloitte Global and 12 NSE member firms.
Solution:
Consolidated monitoring to 2 SCOM instances (upgraded to a latest version) with scalable, high availability and improved security cloud infrastructure.
Integration with ServiceNow CMDB and ITSM.
Leveraged existing configuration along with SME driven tuning and monitoring calibration.
Semi-automated configuration migration and testing.
Deployed 24 geographically dispersed monitoring servers for global coverage.
Co-design and deployment with Microsoft.
Configuration and migration assisted by Silect.
UI and Reporting development assisted by SquaredUp.
Results:
Achieved centralized, cloud-based monitoring for improved visibility and manageability.
Reduced infrastructure footprint and ongoing maintenance costs.
Reduced licensing cost.
Enabled efficient monitoring for Deloitte Global and expanded NSE coverage.
Geographically dispersed monitoring servers helped to address latency, improved security and performance.
Initiated improved user engagement - utilizing number of educational, familiarization and ownership focused activities.

Interesting fact
After the project concluded, Szymon Gebel was invited by Microsoft to speak at their annual conference, Microsoft Ignite, held in Orlando, Florida. Szymon was scheduled to deliver a presentation on SCOM migration to the Microsoft Azure cloud, focusing on experience and challenges.
Unfortunately, due to bilateral business engagement between Microsoft and Deloitte, he was not permitted to attend.
